Frequently Asked Questions
People Want to Know About Hilo Solar Companies

How much does it cost to install solar panels in Hilo?

Residential solar installation in Hilo typically costs between $15,000 and $30,000 before incentives, depending on system size, equipment quality, roof complexity, and whether battery storage is included. Hawaii residents can lower this cost significantly through the 30% federal tax credit, a state tax credit of up to 35%, and possible utility rebates.

Look for licensed, insured, and NABCEP-certified installers with good reviews and a strong track record in Hawaii. Ask for local references, review past projects, and get a detailed proposal that includes system design, cost breakdown, warranties, and service options. Always choose a solar panel installer with an experienced team and a proven track record in the field.

Absolutely. Commercial properties in Hilo can significantly reduce their energy bills with solar power. Businesses can also qualify for tax deductions, federal MACRS depreciation benefits, and local incentives, making it a smart financial and sustainable move.

If you don’t have battery storage, your solar system will automatically shut off during a grid outage to protect utility workers. With a battery, however, you can power essential appliances even during blackouts, making it a smart investment for storm-prone areas.

Many homeowners prefer local Hilo-based solar companies because they understand Hawaii-specific permits, regulations, and environmental conditions. Local companies often provide more personalized service, faster response times, and better post-installation support.

Most Hilo homes can benefit from solar energy, especially if your roof gets decent sun exposure between 9 AM and 3 PM. A site evaluation by a local installer will assess shading, roof angle, orientation, and structural integrity to determine system viability. You can also explore our Hilo solar water heater service to maximize your solar efficiency.

Hawaii’s original net metering program has been replaced by the Customer Grid Supply Plus (CGS+) and Smart Export programs. These allow you to export excess solar energy to the grid and receive credit, helping offset the energy you draw at night or during cloudy days. While credits aren’t always equal to retail rates, these programs still help lower your monthly electricity bills. To qualify, systems must meet specific size and equipment standards set by Hawaiian Electric.
